HISTORY |
|
At 17 years of age Fred Hathaway left Ohio to work with his Uncle in San
Diego, who taught him how to lath. He then went to work for LA Lath as a project manager.
In 1940, Fred moved to the Coachella Valley to open a Palm Springs branch of LA Lath. He
brought with him several years of experience and a reputation of being "firm but
fair". In 1952, he started working for Desert Construction, which was a company that
he founded in the late forties. During his lathing and contracting years he completed such
projects as the Palomar Observatory, Palm Springs Airport, and Desert Hospital. His high
standard of business ethics were simple, treat everyone honestly and fairly, with
integrity and to provide quality service to all of his customers. |

During his contracting years in Palm Springs, many of Freds fellow
contractors would borrow or buy his materials for their construction projects. This
continued until the day came when Fred realized that he was supplying quite a few
contractors and sometimes their whole project with materials. This gave Fred an idea, and
in April of 1968 Desert Construction became Hathaway & Sons,
Inc., a building
materials yard. |
|
| In 1947 Fred married and had three sons. He hoped, that one day, one of his sons,
would take over running the family business. With this in mind, he taught them about the
construction trade, what kind of materials that Hathaways sold and the application
of those materials. Fred felt that this knowledge would help his sons to carry on the
tradition of excellence at
Hathaway &
Sons. |

In
1981, Allen Hathaway, the youngest son, took over the reins of managing the family
business. Since Allen had worked with his father for many years, he was able to quickly
develop his own relationships with suppliers and customers. Allen had a vision for
Hathaways: Move to a central location, a larger facility where customers would have
easy access, and more yard space for loading and unloading materials. In May of 1996,
after 51 years in Palm Springs, Hathaway & Sons moved to the city of Palm Desert,
where we are currently located. |
